Visited this place last week, food didn't taste too bad; however within 30 minutes of eating, we felt absolutely awful, potential food poisoning. The rest of the day was filled with nausea, stomach pains, headache, and just feeling blah. We went because the kids wanted try the conveyor belt and race car delivery concept (this location didn't have the race car). If you like good sushi and are accustom to quality sushi, do not dine here. Never, ever again!!! One note, the service was pleasant and quick, for that they get one star.

First time at this location. There were only two other customers in the place when we got there. The service was really slow and the staff wasn't too friendly. There wasn't much on the belts and we had to wait a long time for everything we ordered & it didn't taste good. Wouldn't go to this location ever again.

Honestly I love Genki sushi... But the Kailua Kona location is absolutely terrible. My family and I never got greeted with IRASHAIMASE when we arrived through the front door!! All the waitresses and waiters were literally looking like they dreaded to be here, maybe one or two were actually patient and actually gave us decent customer service. Our food literally took forever to get to us and some things we ordered never arrived to our table. I am very disappointed with my experience every time I come to this place I travel from HILO to dine at this establishment and every time I leave with disappointment.. I'm sorry, but Genki corporate needs to hold some customer service classes for all employees.. I've been to numerous locations and I can honestly say this location is the absolute WORST !!!!!

  • Eddie H.

This place need to be shut down. The service was is terrible. Every single employee need to be fired. I have been to many Genki Sushi in Oahu and in Washington State and I had excellent service and quality sushi. Here everything is so bad. From the minute I walk in I wanted to leave. They get my order incorrect twice. They are an embarrassment to the company. I want my refund!

  • Drew P.

Oh my. This place is terrible. If you are in the mood to wait a really long time for gas station quality sushi then this is the place for you. We got take out for four people and it took about 25 minutes. The time and effort I spent eating this would have been better spent chewing lava rocks. I would go here again if I got arrested and it was mandated by the state.

Only gave one star because I had to. Service was horrible. Forgot things we ordered, never came by, we had to order from the guy working behind the counter, and to top it off, couldn't figure out how much change to give! C'mon!!! It's printed on the receipt...or she couldn't count. This place used to be good about a year or so ago and now they always have new employees and service/food is dismal. Go anywhere but here...even convenience station food is better than this.

Always great service and fresh food even when their busy! When we're in Kona we always make it a point to stop in, knowing we'll always be satisfied!!! My favorite is the stuffed mushrooms among many others there!! Ivan Y.

Bleh, I made the mistake of actuality sitting down in this establishment. As I sat watching the sushi being made and the rice machine amused me a little. I ate as little as possible. The teriyaki chicken, not sure that was actually chicken. The tuna looked like mush, no idea how long most of the plates had been on the conveyor. My son polished off the rest of the meal, I don't carry an iron stomach anymore. I took a probiotic pill just in case.

FOOD POISONING... I finally understand why the Genki mascot looks like he does... I always wonder how people don't get food poisoning here... There food handling is very poor, I have come in and seen large amounts of uncovered raw fish sitting on the counter waiting to be processed, I will be there an hour and when I leave the fish is still there. I have seen things get handed back an fourth over the bar between the sushi chef and the wait staff and cashier. There are always gnats buzzing around and the staff turns over faster that the pages on the calendar. So yesterday I went there and finished off with a bowl of miso soup because lunch left me feeling a little ill, so I thought to settle my stomach. The soup was more watery and flavorless than usual and not very hot, I wish I sent it back. Within a couple of hours I was pissing out of my ass and feeling like absolute crap. By ten PM it was coming out of both ends and I wanted to DIE...! So if anyone else got sick yesterday please feel free to contact me.

I don't like writing bad reviews. Because believe me, I absolutely love Genki Sushi but this particular location has disappointed me tremendously... Especially in the past year. My kids enjoy Genki Sushi as much as I do but lately the staff has been extremely unprofessional and inattentive. The food was okay... Definitely not as good as it was when they first opened. It's almost like it has gotten worse each year. The last time I came here was over 2 months ago and until they improve things, I may never come here again. My kids waited over 10 minutes for water, and was never offered refills the entire meal. I waited and had to raise my hand desperately for a server to check on us so I could order... At least 3 different times. My 18mo old's meal I had ordered never came. I waited 15 minutes just for my check and again at the front just to pay it. And might I add, their AC wasn't working so it was so hot and there was gnats flying around all the food on the belt. I would've have loved to leave but this was my daughter's birthday and it was her choice for her dinner... (Makes me even more upset because she too wasn't happy with the food... And she's 8!) I told the cashier how unhappy I was but it wasn't her fault. I could tell she felt bad and she apologized on behalf of the company. I gave her a generous tip for her kindness.

I love the food. But the service is very very poor. I have debated wether to post a review for 5 months now hoping that service will improve but seems not.

There seem to be a lot of poor reviews on this place! Maybe we just went at a good time but I was pretty satisfied with my experience here. The place was sort of busy, but not bustling. We got seated and got water right away. Our server was nice. The downside was that there was very few options on the conveyer belt and some of the fish did not look very fresh. The same things were just going around and around. Even though there were like 3 chefs working, they didn't seem to be putting out much food.... so we ordered off the menu. The good thing was the food came very quickly. We got 4 pieces of spicy ahi sushi and a spicy tempura roll. We also picked 2 more spicy ahi, crab mayo, and shrimp tempura off the line. It was all yummy. Overall I would come back here again.

The only Japanese themed restaurant that was open at 3pm. Most places are closed from 2pm-5pm so that gives Genki Sushi a +1. As for the food, the Spicy bomb isn't spicy but sweet (a surprise but in a good way). The other dishes were the basic sushi items like nigiri and such but their special rolls (eg spider roll) weren't tasty at all. Also, I don't think the sushi is fresh based on the taste from most of them. They charge you by the number of plates you pick off the conveyor belt and there's 5 different pricing tiers. If I'm rating this place solely on price, it'll receive 5 stars. Since I'm reviewing this place overall, I'll have to give it a 3.

I've been here several times, & it just seems like this place gets worse & worse, I went in today for a late lunch around 2 pm the girl at the fro2nt told me that the stove was "down" I was really craving Udon & chicken wings so I went on with my day and came back later at night the same girl waited on me and miwas once again rude, I waited 20!!!!!! Minutes, just for the girl to throw my noodles in a bag with nNo utencils or napkins nor pickled ginger and then she said they have no chicken! I asked her why she didn't tell me earlier and as she dug in the tip jar to get ca osh she replied "I just found out" & handed me the $3.50 from the tip box .. Terriable servie although it's fast food, especially for the Big Island this place has No Aloha at al..

  • Kelton J.

What in God's name happens to sushi places when they Americanize? Only the shadow knows. When I ate belt sushi in Tokyo (I got real addicted to that method) I noticed the chefs were constantly mixing it up, putting new and different kinds of sushi on the belt as it traveled around. It kept things fresh and interesting. So what's with this twenty belt trips for the same wilting piece of fish? Genki needs to get its act together or title itself more appropriately - like YUCKY.

  • Roy H.

It's not for sushi snobs and you have to know that going in. But it's quick, fun, and tasty. We stopped in for lunch on our way from the airport to our condo. The conveyor belt is a cute gimmick and the sushi tasted great. I'm sure you can get better sushi on the island, but for "fast food" sushi, it's great.

  • David K.

Major tip - order your sushi from the servers, rather than taking it off the conveyor belt. It will be better and the quality will be higher. This isn't a top drawer sushi restaurant, but the quality is good. Obviously, you're trading off quality for speed , so if you need it quick sushi fix, this is a great place to find it. The prices are relatively good, and overall I think it represents an excellent value.

I love Genki Sushi! I think it's nostalgia for me. I still remember when we waited for seemingly hours for a table at the one on Kapahulu. It's true. The quality at Genki has gone down. Or maybe my palate has matured a bit. But the sushi is still pretty good. Hits the spot. The garlic chicken is way ono! Spicy tuna nigiri is a staple. And I always get a keiki cup. Good for holding pens and pencils!

So unfortunate to have to write this one. I am a pretty neutral fan of genki sushi at other locations but this one was disappointing. Mostly due to the extremely poor service. I must say that there were a few staff members that were okay (they were preparing sushi). We stopped by and there was an extremely long line. You would think it was busy, but there were 4 open booths and a whole 5-7 counter seats available. I stood in line to check in. I was 3rd in a line of 5 groups. The hostess took the first two names and then walked away. It took a while to get seated then we ordered a total of 3 things. They forgot one had to be reminded twice. Once is okay but really? I must say that there were two guys prepping sushi that were working hard. Props to them. But one guy just looked like he was cruising along as if no one could see him taking his sweet time. I will be skipping this place in the future.

I use to love coming to this Genki sushi in Kailua Kona, but over the years I could see that the establishment wasn't upholding its reputation as a clean, family oriented and great customer service. Earlier this evening I went to this establishment hoping to get the sense of how it use to be, but instead I got horrible customer service and I saw baby roaches crawling on the conveyor belt. All though we didn't have to wait long to be seated the customer service was really horrible because the waitress who was suppose to be serving us left while we were still eating because her shift ended. Nobody bothered to ask my boyfriend and I if we wanted anything to order. So instead I spoke to the person who usually makes the sushi to make my order since nobody bothered to even ask, and it was sad because we waited long wanting to order from their menu. When waiting for my food I saw baby roaches crawling between the belt, on top of the belt and in the cracks (ewww). After receiving my dishes it wasn't long after till we decided to leave. We were waiting for a server to help us to count the plates but nobody came AGAIN! So instead we walked to the register having to wait for another 5 minuets. This place use to be the 'go to' for family dining. But never again will I support the Genki sushi in Kailua Kona.

This place got so bad! The place is filthy! Service sucks... Udon noodles came out cold and hard, scallops tasted old. We used to like coming here as a family but the place went down hill, won't be coming back...

I've been to a lot of kaiten (conveyer belt) sushi places, but I think this Genki Sushi was probably the worst. I'm giving two stars though because the food was edible and despite what all the other reviewers say, I thought the service was decent. So the food - there were some interesting options like spam sushi, eggplant tempura sushi and korean beef galbi sushi, among others. The thing is, a lot of the stuff going around looked dried out. My dad ordered an udon soup and even that looked dry! All the places I've been to in LA have covers over each of the dishes, but here they were just out in the open susceptible to air and germs. I was preparing myself for the worst in terms of service, but it was actually fine. We were checked on regularly and the dishes we ordered came out promptly. Can't really ask for too much more than that. Yeah, I don't get why this place is so popular! There were people waiting for seats and a lot of them looked like locals. It's not even that cheap if you think about it. I'm sure there's better sushi somewhere in Kona.

Cheap. Unauthentic. Fast. Easy. Sometimes tasty. Convenient. It is what it is. For people who don't already know about genki sushi, they will be the ones disappointed when they see this is NOT sushi albeit the name states otherwise. I would compare this sushi with people wanting to go to a pizza joint only to find out they are eating microwaved pizza. This is not high quality sushi, this is not even delicious sushi. However, it is still sushi. If you are not looking to spend a bunch of money, want to eat "sushi" as opposed to a burger, and like the convenience of a conveyer belt whizzing sushi by you, this is the place for you. Sushi snobs should definitely stay away (or there will just be more 1 star reviews). People wanting a quick cheap and not a life changing moment of sushi, this hits the spot. There are plenty of non-traditional sushi items on the menu as well, so you have quite a few choices. Your wallet will thank you later for not having to spend a small fortune to eat fresh high makamaka sushi all the time. This hits the spot for me on a few different levels, and when I feel like eating sophisticated sushi, I go somewhere else. I don't expect that here. So it is what it is for me, and there is a place for it in my palate. Therefore 3 and a half stars, rounded up to 4, as 3 wouldn't be right.

I'd give zero stars if It were possible. I don't know why I keep coming here!! It's this location in particular, because on Oahu it's not like this. Girls in there have BAD attitudes!! I can say something because I've worked in customer service and these girls are terrible including the supervisor. If you don't like your job... QUIT!!

Good sushi but expensive if you want to get full. Also seats are always open but it takes forever to get seated. Half the staff is amazing and the other half are boo awful.

I have lived near this store for 4 years and the customer service has always been very slow. Mediocre food. I only go because the kids like picking food off the conveyor belt.

  • John C.

Genki has gotten progressively worse over the past few years when it comes to quality and cleanliness. The servers are friendly and attentive. But the food has taken a hit. Wish they could get back to the way they were. However for quick sushi it is the place to go. I do recommend ordering all items fresh. It takes a few extra minutes but the quality will be a little better.

  • Nunya B.

The service wasn't great at all, we didn't even get the plates we ordered even after letting the server know. He had an attitude about it and never came back to check on us. Nothing like having a sit down meal and the servers a congregated next to our table talking about their personal lives. Not very professional at all. Where have all the ethics gone?! It was a big let down, what once was good service is not longer...u guys have lost another customer.

  • JoAnne D.

Sad to say this place has gone down hill... I love sushi, but probably won't be coming back anytime soon! The restaurant was dirty. My shoes were sticking to the floor while walking to our table. The seats on the booths were obviously soiled, the printed pattern on the backrests were blackened by dirty hands touching them. I didn't dare touch the backrests to see if it was sticky, but they obviously don't take the time to clean it. There were small cockroaches crawling around on the backrests & in the conveyor belt area. I saw lots of crumbs under/in the belt area. And it can't be from the days service because they open at 10:30a and we got there at 10:45a! The service was slowwwww!!! Most of our time there was spent waiting on our server to take our order, waiting on the sushi, or waiting for more items to be added to the belt. The belt was practically empty with only junk sushi rotating around and around. The kind that no one wants to eat. Lastly, the food was BLAND!!!! Not enough vinegar in the rice, not enough mayo in the spicy tuna, not enough garlic in the mayo sauce, they used masago instead of tobikko. I could go on and on. Just very disappointed in genki sushi today.

Service is ridiculously crappy. I thought the sushi chef was fine, and the sushi was on par in comparison to other Genki Sushi restaurants. But the service was poor. I asked for hot tea and water, the server looked confused and only came back with water. Our server took an order from us within the first 5 minutes of sitting, but never came back after that. Waited almost 15 minutes for someone to come by and count our plates. In the mean time they all seemed to disappear on break, were filling shoyu bottles, talking story, cleaning, or doing something else. The restaurant wasn't even close to busy so I'm not sure how they couldn't keep track of the people there. I did stop one lady to let her know that we were done. She said she would get our server, but neither her or our original server came back. 5 minutes later another girl doing the same duties as the girl I stopped, came by and was able to count our plates and give us our bill. 2* for the sushi. if the sushi wasn't okay i would give this place 0.

  • Bruce H.

The gimmick is the self serve, conveyor fed, sushi. The conveyor runs around the entire place, by every table, and you pick items off the conveyor. The color of the plate tells you how much it is. Pros: Fast, relatively inexpensive. Cons: Bland, not very unique sushi. To me, sushi is all about the quality of the fish, and the preparation of the rice. The rice was OK, and the fish was "meh"... Sliced super thin, not well sliced in some situations. I'd really give it 2.5 stars, but since Yelp doesn't give fractions, well, gotta round down, because when you are in Hawaii, the fish better be better than this.

My husband and I love going to genki's, unfortunately recently each time we go the service keeps getting worse and WORSE! Our waitress asked us if we wanted to order from the menu but she didn't seem at all attentive to us because we had repeat our order more then once! She was so spacey! She gave us our drinks but no straws. we waited a long time before she walked past our table so I could get her attention to ask for straws, which she took forever to get! The poor service was aggravating so we just ate what we ordered and was over it! Normally we like to talk story and casually pull items off the belt but we felt we owed the sushi guys some courtesy and eat what we ordered because they were prompt and well mannered. ALL the waitresses need be either let go or retrained because their professionalism is slim to none. After receiving our check went to the counter to pay. We waited for several minutes and no one came to help us, the sushi boy even yelled "register!" And still we waited a few more minutes!! It wasn't until he physically went to find a waitress is when we got helped. While waiting we noticed all tables were occupied with customers who appeared to need assistance but there were no waitresses. The girl who finally came to ring us up was not apologetic and was quick to take our check and tell us how much we owe... My husband asked why we had to wait so long and the girl said one waitress went to the bathroom and the other was on break so it was just her on duty. YIKES! 1 waitress and a full restaurant THAT IS NOT RIGHT! management needs to do something about coverage and either hire decent mannered employees or retrain what they have. WE WONT BE RETURNING ANYTIME SOON!

The sushi is good here. A couple of my favorites include the spicy bomb, dynamite roll, and green bean tempura. There are also American options for those who are still adventuring into the world of sushi (chicken, fries, cupcakes). Eat wisely because everything on the menu is a la carte and each plate is color coded by price. The price is decent, although I question how one cupcake can be $4! You can either take plates that pass by your table on a conveyor belt or order from the menu if you don't see your favorite dish on the line. However, each time I have been to Genki Sushi the servers take a while to flag down...and they hardly checked on our table which I find strange since the customers pretty much serve themselves here. All in all, this is a good and quick place to feed your sushi craving on a budget.

The only novelty here is the rolling belt that carries sushi around the restaurant. There is much better sushi elsewhere, like Sushi Shiono or Hayashi's. There's a lot of parking, but not too much space inside the restaurant. I've seen wait time as high as 30 minutes during peak hours. I really enjoy the don spicy tuna bowl deal (3x more spicy tuna). That really hit the spot! I also enjoyed the shrimp tempura roll, dynamite rolls, and scallop mayo rolls. The other rolls were less than spectacular and I've definitely had better at other sushi restauarnts. Bill Tip: DO NOT get anything from the belt if it has been on there for awhile. I've seen babies dip their hands in the food after digging for gold in their nose. Bill Tip: The small plates add up, so be aware of how much you are spending before you end up spending $30 for sushi!

I didn't take the time to check out the reviews before we came and I must say I am glad I didn't. The management must have been reading them though because the service is obviously much improved from what others seem to have experienced. We did have to wait a while for a booth although it was mid afternoon on a Saturday. Three different servers checked on us during our meal, keeping our drinks filled and making sure we didn't need anything else. We tried 10 things and they were all very acceptable. It was quite busy so our fish was all reassuringly cool and we did order our gyoza and spring rolls fresh. Unfortunately the spring rolls were still cold in the middle but they were promptly replaced by piping hot ones. We come to Hawaii frequently so we will be sure to come here again.

Genki is not for the snobbish or particular. Its sushi at its convenience, what it lacks in authenticity it makes up in modern restauranteering. The food. The sushi is far from authentic but this does not make it bad sushi. The sushi is good tasting yet different. Its kind of like compairing jack in the box burgers to your local high end dine in burger restaurant. The service. Can be slow due to crowds, partially due to not having enough servers at times. The quality is good. Ive never had anyone be rude before. It can be a long wait for a table if it is crowded, especially if you want to sit in a booth or come with three or more guests. The atmosphere. Fastfood restaurantish. Non traditional by obvious observations. No pearl inlaid stitched wall hangings or kimonos here. Standard dress is yellow polo shirts and seating is modern. Probably the most noticable feature is the belt fed sushi bar, delivering tractorized bites of traditional and non traditional sushi treats. The restaurant is clean. Bathrooms are public Price. It depends. It can be reasonable. It is by a long shot cheaper than an authentic meal. If you eat like me you will pay more than you would at BK. I tend to engorge myself at genki to the point my insides hurt. This usually cost 25-30 dollars. If you eat what u need and no more you could expect to leave spending 10-15.

I'm not sure why this place it so bad compared to the Ala Moana/Kapahulu Genki sushi, which is pretty decent. They always seem to run out of items, the ahi seems to always taste really fishy, and they should throw away the old stuff going around on the belt. I will probably never go back to this Genki location.

I was really hungry so everything tasted good. It didn't seem like they had a variety on the belt, so I did order some. It is expensive though. This place is mostly for tourists who are craving sushi.

I've eaten at this Genki Sushi many times. I am always greeted and seated promptly. Admittedly, this is not high quality sushi, but it is affordable and edible. They are the fast food of "sushi." As one reviewer stated if you're a sushi snob this is not the place for you. I would recommend that you always order your selections from the waitress, and items are sometimes left on the belt a little longer than is idea. If you then you are guaranteed a freshly made dish. If you prefer the belt then stick with items you watched them put out fresh. The turn over of dishes are slow at certain times of the day resulting in a poorly stocked belt, especially at shift change around 3:30. The belt is usually always well stocked for the dinner rush. Overall, a fun experience if you want that sushi vibe on the cheap in Kona.

I wanted to give this Genki Sushi a higher rating because it is the only one on the Big Island, but unfortunately I couldn't. People on the Big Island deserve a sushi restaurant where you can get good sushi at a fair price. I went to this location in Kona a couple of times when they first opened a few years ago, and they were pretty good. Decent sushi, and the prices were not to bad. The restaurant was always busy at that time, and the customer service was good. Recently I heard from several people that the place wasn't as good as before. So while in Kona last month we decided to give them a try again. I was suprised to see that what people were saying was true. When you walk in no one greets you anymore. There was a lot of open tables, and the sushi conveyor belt had very few choices the entire time that we were there! The few choices that were available of course were not the greatest. I thought that the whole theory behind having a belt system like that is to have a good selection going around? You could obviously see that customers were not happy, and just took what was available. We needed to order all of our sushi from the waitress who was the only person there who saved our eating experience. She did check on us regularly, and took our orders with no problems. If not for her Genki would have got a one star for sure! As for the sushi, it was ok. Hopefully whoever is running the Genki Sushi in Kona makes some big changes. They are in a good location, and have a proven "belt" selection system that works in other restaurants. Until they make the changes, I do not recommend eating there.

Admittedly, Genki Sushi does not qualify as being a peak experience when it comes to eating sushi, but some of their locations are better than others. This one is a little disappointing. There were very few choices on the conveyor belt, so we had to order things from the server. I will give them this, the salmon nigiri was pretty good. The worst part of it was the fact that prices were considerably more expensive than their locations on Oahu, and for mediocre food and service, it was not worth it.

After a long day of hitting the beach and only one sushi place open on Sunday, we decided to try Genki Sushi. It was very busy and had to wait to be seated. Costumer service was definitely lacking from when we first walked in the door. A couple that came in after us was seated prior to us, why? I have no idea but we said something and they cleared us a table quickly. Our waitress was not very friendly, but we were served water and tea promptly. Everything on the belt looked questionable to as how long it had been on there so we stuck to the menu. I ordered miso soup, a California roll and later pulled some inari of the belt as they put fresh ones on. My friend had a salad, there was some sort of seafood on it but we couldn't figure out what type lol. She also had the California roll, no complaints. Everything was good, not fantastic but wasn't bad. This is like fast food sushi, like others have said if you are a sushi snob then don't bother coming here. I think the costumer service could be improved, but hey if wanting fast inexpensive sushi I'd go back.

On our last day in Hawaii we got to eat sushi. This place was awesome. I loved watching the rolls go round on the belt. I've never been to a place like this. The price were incredibly reasonable and the food was delicious. We HAD to try the spam sushi and I highly recommend it. I also tried the mochi strawberry ice cream which I've yet to find in the landlocked state that I live in. It was cute and delicious. There was pickled ginger at the table which my husband loved (I don't like the stuff). You can either order from a waiter or pick food from the belt. We ordered our food and asked the waiter for suggestions. The food that was suggested was so good. I wish that we had one of these in Indiana, but we can dream, right?

This place is an insult to all the sushi chefs who take pride in making quality sushi with the finest ingredients. Only ate here once and never will come back. Ordered California roll, when it came I found hair in it. Informed the waitress who took it back and had them make me another. Waited 15 minutes still no sushi. Finally got my sushi and it had a eye lash in it. I just got up and left.

Slowest/worst Genki I have ever been to. Extremely long wait, seats were available, yet no one was clearing the dishes away from previous customers. When we finally got seated, it was another long wait to place an order.

The service is slow. They don't give enough and the staff don't fill you water until you ask. Its even worst when your the only people and the don't help you.

By far the worst service I have ever encountered. The wait was incredibly long, and that wouldn't have been so bad if it was worth it, but it definitely was not. We were seated at a dirty table, the wait staff was rude and unattentive. It took forever to be served our drinks (which was just water by the way), the tempura was burnt on the outside and raw in the middle. When we finally were able to flag down our waitress for the bill (which took an addition thirty minutes to do) she acted like it was our fault that the shrimp tempura was cooked improperly. We will NEVER go back there again. DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME HERE.

I LOVE Genki Sushi but I HATE this location! It TOTALLY SUCKS. The service is super, super, super slow and they get the orders wrong ALL the time. When you go out to eat at restaurants such as these, you usually plan to be there anywhere from an hour to two hours right? Of course, depending on who's keeping you company and how much time you have to spare for lunch. Well, I swear . . . Every time I go to eat here, I've been in there for at least two hours - NOT willingly. ONLY because they take FOREVER with my food or they get the order wrong. The first time I went to eat there, I had a really good server - but he was sooo slow. I mean I was waiting for half an hour (not even busy) for my food! And then I ordered a california hand roll and received spicy ahi! And thennnnn, when I FINALLY got my California roll, it WAS SOOO MESSY and just looked disgusting. I didn't even end up eating it! The second time I ate there it seriously took forever for me to get my food. Out of courtesy my friend was waiting to eat until I got my food, and 15 minutes went by before our server came and told us that he forgot my order. I haven't eaten there since and wouldn't eat there UNLESS I was totally craving Genki. When people ask me about it, I ALWAYS give bad reviews. I totally dislike this Genki location.

Food is ehh. The chefs making the food was friendly but the waitress working was utterly useless. If the food is on a rotating belt, why is it so difficult for them to refill my drink?! The job only required half the attention span! Better of paying a little more for real sushi if you know your seafood

I have to admit that I was pleasantly surprised by my first experience at a Genki Sushi while vacationing in Kona. I'm usually not a fan of the sushi boat/conveyor belt concept, because that usually means lower quality and let's face it, some of the dishes floating by look like they've been there awhile. While the food here won't win any awards anytime soon, it is pretty good quality at a reasonable price. The priciest dishes we picked up were $4.95 for soft shell crab rolls and tempura rolls with spicy tuna. I do have to say that I was a fan of their bright and open layout. Most Japanese restaurants tend to have a darker, tight atmosphere, but not here. I also liked how they placed booths around the sushi bar. Instead of two or maybe three stools, you have a booth for 4 to 6. Overall, it was a good experience and if you're looking for a quick bite, Genki Sushi is a good choice.

Probably the worst sushi place I have ever encountered. The prices are very cheap but you get what you pay for. The service is non existent. I waited 30 mins for rolls I ordered and they were horrible. The conveyer belt has many old items on it and the only way to get anything fresh is to special order it which takes a MINIMUM of 30 mins. I will never go back. Horrible restaurant.

I would give this a 2.5 if I could. The service definitely needs attention. It is really lacking good customer service. Food is fast food style sushi, nothing to write home about. Prices are decent for what you get. I would say if you want a quick sushi fix it is ok, but it will take you forever to get the check, your drinks, etc you might as well just have gone to the store and saved yourself some money and time.

Good sushi for the price you pay. They have a good selection and always fun picking your dishes on a moving belt and also on a menu. What was terrible was the service. Not all the staff, just the one who was supposed to serve us. Not to completely post her name but it started with a "C" and ended with an "E". Rhymes with "cayenne". She avoided doing anything at all times. If you get her as your server, don't worry as you will never get a chance to talk to her, get eye contact, or even trip her as she passes you by. Sorry to bag on her but it was bad. Her and the last server I mentioned before are probably related as it looks like the customer service skills was cut from the same mold. In order not to end on a bad note, the rest of the staff was great. Sushi staff are always friendly. Food was always consistent and beautiful presentations.

We were extremely disappointed in Genki Sushi. We had just stopped in to take a look at the new Target across the street and thought a Sushi lunch would be good before our Costco run. When we arrived a little before 2pm, the place was about 1/3 full so we promptly got a seat. There was very little on the belt so everything was special order from the 4 staff making sushi. Shortly after sitting down we ordered two spicy tuna rolls and 3 orders of salmon nigiri. One of the first things we noticed was the large amount of fish cut in strips that was just laying out on the counters. There was a large pile of tuna, easily 5 pounds. At another station even more of a white fish. There was frequently no-one even working in front of or with these large piles. I've never seen a Sushi restaurant treat their fish this way. We watched one of the staff working on making a spicy tuna preparation and it must have taken her several minutes to dice the tuna. It was a slow process for her, obviously not very good with a knife. It didn't help that she kept touching her face and hair, at least she changed her gloves each time. We got our salmon order relatively quickly and it was good quality. After watching the lady attempting to dice tuna for a while, and seeing other people served one of the wait staff asked if we wanted to order anything else. I said we were still waiting for our spicy tuna and could he check on it. More time passes and another server asked us if we wanted to order something. Again, we're still waiting for our spicy tuna, please check on it. Neither server ever came back to tell us what was going on. Through this time, the staff making the sushi spent more time talking to each other than making any sushi. This place could really use some strong management and experienced staff to come in and set things right. After spending probably 40-45 minutes in the place the only thing we ever had was those three orders of salmon nigiri at the very beginning. The staff making the sushi ignored us and the wait staff spent most of their time on the other side of the restaurant. The few things we did see get made were handed directly to other diners. Nothing new ever made it onto the belt and nothing else ever came our direction. I managed to flag someone down from the other side and asked for our check (grand total $9.06) and we paid, of course leaving no tip. We won't be back.

This was the first Genki I've tried outside of Oahu...unpolished crew...was vacationing with relatives in Kailua-Kona, and was glad to see this shop there at Kona Commons.... We went there a little after 2pm Sunday afternoon for lunch after some sightseeing...wait was about 20 minutes... the belt line of food was few!...they couldn't catch up with the crowd? To make things worse, it seemed that they placed foods on the one side, and the hungry eaters on that end kept taking the food as fast as they could slowly put it on the conveyor belt, so by the time it got to the crew's back side(where we sat/the 1st table at the very left front end))...there was nothing! So we called for help...one local girl said, ok...I'll help you after I help the people on the other side...well, she NEVA came back!... We asked other local girls for help in ordering off the menu as we had a plane to catch shortly at the airport... She kept on forgetting our teriyaki chicken bowl...we asked another lady after about 10" what happened to that bowl, so can they check? She went back we see to the back kitchen, but didn't come back later to tell us anything...few minutes later, we ask again..same local girl says she'll check...well, so many of them went to check, but hey, WHEA DA FOOD? My tuna rolls that I ordered, came in the plastic wrap, and was sloppily put together...I mean, I've never seen that before..at the other Genki Sushi on Oahu!...Their quality of presentation is just NOT there...they need to practice 'quality control' and 'service for follow-ups' on food orders forgotten. Maybe give them a few months or a better trained, OLDER more experienced staff may help them a LOT.

the sushi on the conveyer was really old, and there was nothing good going around just spam and cupcakes ( very stale looking and expensive) The one tuna sashimi that came around was hard. The pieces we ordered weren't very good either, very very small slices of very poor quality fish.

Been to other Genki locations on other islands. This was my only time going to this one. We arrived before 1pm on a Wednesday. There wasn't that much on the belt so I ordered an avocado maki, ume maki, and ahi nigiri. The ahi came immediately like it was sitting someplace. I waited for over 20 min & finally asked if my sushi was almost ready & if not then just cancel my order. I was starving & the few selections on the belt looked unappetizing. The waitress (who was non existent) said oh I'll check on it. She then brought back a pkg of avocado maki which was freezing cold & said they forgot about the ume maki. I paid, left & had to go someplace else to eat. Place sucks.

Oh goodness... No No No... I was here on vacation, couldn't find a place to eat, so we ended up here. I must say, for a place so close to the ocean... none of the seafood items were fresh. It was just terrible... but we were starving so too bad for us. Think I would have been better off just eating papayas for dinner...

I got Genki the first day I arrived in Kona, and the girl's face at the counter matched the face on the sign. Although the rolls are at a better price than most restaurants on the mainland, they weren't very exceptional considering the quality of fish in Hawaii. They do have take out available although it is a sit down restaurant, which is how I ordered.

If I could give 0 stars I would.. This used to be a favorite place to eat but lately it has been HORRIBLE! The service SLOW and food BAD.. Last night I was in there and the waitperson was wiping her nose with her hand and sniffling and complaining that everyone was SICK. Sure enough when I look around I noticed other food prep people and waitpersons were sniffling etc... .. I LEFT...

Yayyy for Genki Sushi! Food: Everything we ordered and/or got off the sushi boats was wonderful. Only complaint is that we ordered a chicken teriyaki bowl for the 3 year old, and it never showed up. It was okay though since he picked off of all our plates anyways. Service: There was no employee over the age of 23. But you know what?? They were all wonderful! We felt so horrible because we spilled a bottle of red wine (that we brought in for free) and they were so gracious in helping us clean it up. Prices: We ordered, and ordered, and grabbed some more off the sushi boats. Total for 4 people?? $44. That is dirt cheap in my book!! We left a large tip though, because of the red wine mess we made.

It's a strange place, this restaurant. I love the layout, I'm a huge fan of the conveyor belt sushi, lots of fun. And so cheap! Best prices in town. Love the hot tea. I only eat here at lunch rush hour (around 12-2). If you go when it is slow there won't be much on the belt and I always worry about how many times the few items on the belt have gone round and been sneezed on (I get a little paranoid about this stuff). The service is weird. You are frequently forgotten, and it's hard to get an order in. I don't blame the kids, it's the set-up, there doesn't seem to be any determined order. I wait tables, I watch them, they just don't have a system. They are well-meaning, however (except one of the sushi chefs, she just frightens me, she's mean looking). I think they pool tips. If each person was responsible for making their own money then believe me, service would get better! So I have mixed feelings about this place. The food is dirt cheap and edible, some of it quite good, some not so much, but for a couple bucks who cares? And the service not speedy, but it is a serve-yourself type of place-- so again, who cares? I'd say go here if you want to grab a quick lunch or just have something different, even if you don't like it you've only spent a few dollars, so there's very little to lose.

  • Melissa D.

  • Bach L.

Food is ehh. The chefs making the food was friendly but the waitress working was utterly useless. If the food is on a rotating belt, why is it so difficult for them to refill my drink?! The job only required half the attention span! Better of paying a little more for real sushi if you know your seafood

SO much for for a group! Feels like you are in Tokyo because of the conveyer belt of sushi. Also- must try their MOCHI!

Not worth it. Felt like mall food court sushi complete with plastic wrapped nori and a bit too much mayonnaise.

QUIT!!

I have lived near this store for 4 years and the customer service has always been very slow. Mediocre food. I only go because the kids like picking food off the conveyor belt.

  • Bill C.

Genki Sushi is the fast food version of Sushi. Very factory like in opertion, with all the belt driven. irashamasei screaming and sushi ball automation to be had. Genki is not for the snobbish or particular. Its sushi at its convenience, what it lacks in authenticity it makes up in modern restauranteering. The food. If you are looking for authentic quizine you best notice the yellow shirts and get the idea fast. No obi clad getta clapping waiteress will be seating you this evening.

Food is ehh. The chefs making the food was friendly but the waitress working was utterly useless. If the food is on a rotating belt, why is it so difficult for them to refill my drink?! The job only required half the attention span! Better of paying a little more for real sushi if you know your seafood

SO much for for a group! Feels like you are in Tokyo because of the conveyer belt of sushi. Also- must try their MOCHI!
